Why do Licensing Agreements matter?

Have you heard of Qualcomm?
This tech company develops wireless communication chips and technology, with many patents essential for the functioning of mobile networks and devices. To enable mobile device manufacturers to use their technologies, Qualcomm license their technologies against appropriate fees. This means that all mobile device manufacturers wishing to use 3G, 4G or 5G technologies, including the likes of Samsung or Apple, must pay Qualcomm a fee to use their patents.

This enables the company to generate income from mobile device manufacturers across the globe, basing its business model on licensing of technologies that add value to other companies’ products.
