IceBiotic winner of the 9th student competition for the most innovative food product – Ecotrophelia Serbia 2021 held at STP Belgrade

The IceBiotic team from the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Belgrade, with its product Ice Biotic – a functional ice cream dessert based on goat’s milk enriched with inulin and probiotic cultures, is the winner of the ninth student competition in creating eco-innovative food products – Ecotrophelia Serbia 2021, held on Friday, 25 June at the Science Technology Park Belgrade.

Seven student teams from several universities and academies of higher vocational schools participated in the competition, organized by the Serbian Food Technologists Association. The winning team will participate in the European competition Ecotrophelia Europe on 10 and 11 October 2021 in Cologne, Germany, at the ANUGA fair.

The second place was won by the Ice team from the University of Novi Sad, with the product EcoFreeze – a refreshing ice cream based on herbal and fruit powder, which is a by-product from the filter tea industry. The third place was shared by the Be Free team from the University of Nis, which developed Cookie Free -a handmade vegan cake without gluten, sugar and additives with the addition of apple trope, and the Jigsey team from the Academy of Applied Studies Belgrade with the product of the same name, which is beef liver chips in several flavours. This year, by the decision of the jury and with the exclusive support of Desing, a special award for communication skills was given to the Okarina team from the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Belgrade, with the product of the same name representing eco-innovative gluten-free, sugar-free bread rich in fibre, proteins and containing soya.

– The winners of the national competition have a great opportunity to present their product and business ideas at the European competition of the best student teams, which is traditionally held at one of the leading European food fairs, and this year at ANUGA in Cologne. They have the opportunity to see how their ideas, abilities and skills meet the needs of the European and even the world market – said professor Viktor Nedovic, President of the Serbian Food Technologists Association and President of the Organizing Committee of the national competition.

The participants were addressed on behalf of STP Belgrade by Jelena Petrovic, Assistant Director for Business Development, who pointed out the support that STP Belgrade provides to teams and companies in the development and commercialization of innovative products and services.

The Ecotrophelia Serbia competition is organized as part of the Smart Specialization Strategy Serbia (4S), one of the priorities of which is “Food for the Future”, under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management, and with the support of the USAID Competitive Economy Project, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the Science and Technology Park Belgrade, the Centre for Science Promotion, together with training and educational support and partnership with the Case Study Club of the Faculty of Organizational Sciences, to encourage entrepreneurship among students and help put innovative products on domestic and international markets.
